Lights Out!

Posted Thursday July 31st, 2014, 11:54 am

WW1centenary_715x195

The Royal British Legion are promoting "Lights Out". The UK-wide event is an invitation to everyone to turn off their lights from 10 pm until 11 p.m. on 4th August, leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment.

Lights Out will be one of the largest mass participation events of its kind ever seen in the UK, and will complement the candle lit service held at Westminster Abbey on 4th August.

At 11 p.m. on 4th August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany. As the time approached, the then British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, remarked: "The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime".

Lights Out is a headline project of the cultural programme 14-18 NOW and was initiated by the department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Royal British Legion is supporting the event as the nation's custodian of Remembrance.

Roger Bache and Roger Tait,  Heart of England Judges are due in Bridgnorth on the morning of Tuesday 22nd July. Roger Bache, a regular judge to Bridgnorth is always looking for new projects, improvements and community involvement!

On Saturday 19th July there is a community involvement day around the town. We are asking that local residents, volunteers and community groups work with us for the day in our parks and open spaces from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. A few hours would be very welcome to help us improve areas for the local community and visitors alike and continue our community entry. Contact Ashley or Barry at the Town Council on 01746 762231 if you could spare a few hours.

Starting in the cemetery the judges will be shown  a short presentation about the community events and projects we are unable to show them on the day before being whisked off to the Veolia Recycling Plant and the caravan park. They will continue up into High Town across the bridge, Quayside and Lavington Gardens and up in the Castle Hill Railway before being taken to the new Community Garden at the Innage Lane Youth Centre. The judges will then have the opportunity to walk down the High Street to the jewel in the crown of Castle Grounds where the Bridgnorth Sinfonia will welcome the judges.

The Britain in Bloom judges have now been announced. Jeff Bates and Ian Beaney will be in town on the afternoon of Friday 1st August. These national judges are flying and training it all over the British Isles including the Isles of Scilly marking the entries.

Town Clerk, Anne Wilson who with the community is working on the entry said " We are really looking forward to meeting Jeff and Iain when they visit our town at the beginning of August - it's always a great honour to show these judges around our beautiful town and useful when they give us advice on how we could improve our open spaces further. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the local community, our volunteers, sponsors and the local authorities for their commitment to this event".
